Mads Mikkelsen’s Genius In ‘Another Round’

In unison, critics, the media and the public were asking for an Oscar nomination for best actor for Mads Mikkelsen. Not only would it have been the celebration of a brilliant career, but perhaps the recognition of the best performance he has achieved. The protagonist of Another Round –Otra Ronda, as the new film by Danish director and screenwriter Thomas Vinterberg will be known in Spanish– leaves everything on the screen.

The Oscar nomination was not given, but this is not the first time that eyes have fallen on the Dane: his character’s dramatic return to Denmark in After the Wedding is unforgettable. The coldness with which he portrayed Le Chiffre, the remembered villain of James Bond’s Casino Royale; the rumor that brings Lucas’s life to ruin – his role as a preschool teacher in The Hunt – or his chilling version of the psychopath Hannibal Lecter in the TV series. Now he is a drunken professor, who with his colleagues is part of a social experiment.

“Alcohol was not, is not the point of the movie. We have a long list of fantastic films that have addressed the issue of alcohol misuse and abuse. Not only does our country have movies like this, all countries have them. Here we had a different mission, which is closer to accepting life, with or without alcohol. In my case, I investigated what alcohol does, ”says Mikkelsen in an interview provided by the study.

Another Round was chosen as the best foreign film in the last edition of the Oscar awards. Mikkelsen is not only director Thomas Vinterberg’s favorite actor, but they have been best friends for a long time.

“I think I heard about this project, right after The Hunt,” Mikkelsen recalls of Another Round, which premieres this Thursday, July 1 in theaters of the country. Well, I knew there was at least one idea. As is often the case with Thomas (the director) and Tobias (Lindholm, co-writer), there is something superficial at first that will later encompass something more profound about being human. In this case it’s about life, embracing it, you know, picking up the phone, doing something about it, not just letting life go by ”.

Mikkelsen has just finished filming the third part of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which he replaced Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, after he was fired for the scandal with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
