A surprise for fans: Taylor Swift announced on her Instagram story today that she will be releasing her new song “Carolina” tonight. It is the title tune for the film “The Song of the River Crayfish”, which will be released in German cinemas on August 18th.

Some of the fans could already guess on Tuesday that a new song would be released. The official Instagram account of “Where the Crawdads Sing” posted messages with certain letters in all caps, which, when strung together, spelled out “Carolina This Thursday.” In the same way, Taylor Swift has also sent secret messages in the booklets of her previous albums.

Haunting, magical and beautiful

“Carolina” is Taylor’s first self-penned song since her album Evermore, which she released in late 2020. The song was recorded in a single take. Only instruments were used that already existed in the early 1950s, at the time when the first part of “The Song of the Crayfish” also takes place. Reese Witherspoon, who is producing the film, said in an interview: “She read this book and loved it so much, and then she heard we were making a movie [während der Zeit]in which she recorded her ‘Folklore’ album, and then she wrote a song with the whole ‘Folklore’ team that was so haunting and magical and beautiful.”
