We tested Firecuda 530, the PS5 compatible M.2 PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD, and we tell you how it performs

We thoroughly tested the Firecuda 530, another of the NVMe M.2 PCIe gen 4 SSDs already available and that by its specifications, is fully compatible with the internal storage of the PS5. Are there any differences with the internal disk of the console? Let’s get out of doubt …

Since the long-ago firmware update of September 2021, PS5 can expand its storage for games with NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSDs, which offer read and write speeds similar or even higher than the internal hard drive of PS5.

The supply has grown significantly, and although many are exhausted after Black Friday and due to the shortage of components, we’ve tested several M.2 SSDs to see how they perform with PS5.

Thus, after testing models such as the WB_BLACK SN850, XPG GAMMIX S70 or the PNY XLR8 CS3140, today it is the turn of a Seagate model. It’s time for Review of the NVMe M.2 Firecuda 530 SSD and see how it behaves on PS5.

Will it be among the best M.2 NVMe SSDs compatible with PS5? Will it offer faster speeds than the PS5’s internal disc? Well, all that and much more is what we are going to verify in the tests of this new SSD disk.

As in previous tests, we are going to skip the steps to install an SSD expansion disk in PS5, since it is something that we already showed you a long time ago and the process is identical, from how to access the PS5 SSD compartment to how You must screw and fix the M.2 disk correctly using the metal washer.

The version we have tested for these Firecuda 530 tests is 1 TB version with heatsink or “heatsink” (you know, always better with heatsink) and although at the moment it is sold out in many stores, you can find the 500 GB model from 179.90 euros while the 1 GB one, through a reseller, shoots up up to 259 euros at the moment.

Once installed and formatted, the Firecuda 530 returns 6561.798MB / s read speed on PS5, the highest of the discs we have tested to date, and also higher than the factory internal disc, which makes this M.2 valid as an expansion of the internal storage of PS5 and runs games without problems.

Read speed Firecuda 530 on PS5

To check the performance of the Firecuda 530, we are going to perform the same tests as with previous SSDs, transferring three sets from the internal hard drive to the new M.2.

Those three PS5 games are once again Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls Remake and Ratchet & Clank: A Dimension Apart, so that the tests and times can be compared to the rest of the M.2 discs.

We have tried to run them both from the internal disk, and once transferred to the Firecuda 530, to see if they gave the same results, improved or worsened in any way.

To move the 128.9 GB that occupy the three games of the internal disk to the Firecuda 530 it has only taken 1 minute and 47 seconds, the lowest time behind only the PNY XLR8 CS3140 with ELUTENG M.2 2280 heatsink (it is a disc that is sold without heatsink), which took a second less in our tests.

Firecuda 530 Transfer

To check the performance of the SSD unit that we have made, they have been the same with the three games: start it and go to the menu to calculate the speed of the initial load, and once the game is loaded, how long it takes from the menu to load one saved game or even how long it takes to load if we take a fast trip.

In the case of Demon’s Souls Remake, the times to load the game, from the console menu until the letters “press any button” appear on the logo screen, are identical, and in both cases are around 23 seconds (without the curtain from PS Studios and skipping the cinematic).

The same is applicable to load the game (about 4 seconds). There are no differences in the execution of the game from the internal disc of PS5 or the Firecuda 530, it takes the same.

We have also not noticed a big difference when loading a level from the Nexus, the central world of Demon’s Souls, where it takes a few thousandths less to load the game from the Firecuda 530, but it is almost priceless.

In the case of Miles Morales, from the internal disk the game takes just 10 seconds to load, although the images begin to show 8 tenths earlier if we run it from the Firecuda 530, although the menu appears almost at the same time.

Loading the game from the saved game selection menu takes a little less than 4 seconds, and here the Firecuda 530 cuts a few thousandths with respect to internal storage, but is practically negligible. The same applies to fast travel, after choosing the subway entrance, Firecuda 530 loads the game in a few thousandths less.

Finally, the tests with Rachet & Clank show values that follow the same line. The initial load of the game takes 6 seconds (Firecuda 530 here is 15 thousandths slower, an invaluable figure), while the load of a game returns identical values in both storages, both the internal and the Firecuda 530.

Logically, it must be taken into account that These measurements have been made under optimal temperature conditions (the console was previously off, at room temperature), nor have they been carried out in summer, since excess heat can affect the performance of the units.

In any case, and in the light of these values and measurements, the Firecuda 530 is another valid option to expand the internal storage of PS5 with guarantees, and without the performance and speed of PS5 suffer.

In fact, in some areas, its higher speed cuts load times, making it a clear candidate to consider if you’re wondering which SSD drive to buy for PS5 today.
