Nélson Veríssimo made the preview against Benfica-Moreirense, a game referring to the 18th round of the League Bwin, scheduled for 6:00 pm on Saturday, January 15, at Estádio da Luz. The eagles’ coach intends to approach him as if “he were the last, with dedication and determination”, so that the fight for the title is firm.
At a press conference in Benfica Campus, Nélson Veríssimo gave an account of the “expected difficulties” against Moreirense, who won in Ricardo Sá Pinto’s debut in the technical command of the canons, in Vizela, on the last day of the League, but asserted that the squad “accredits no title” and the players have had “a very big commitment“.
the words of President Rui Costa in the interview given to BTV were addressed, with Nélson Veríssimo thanking “confidence” demonstrated, underlining that the important thing is “work towards goals” of the current season.
What do you think about the game against Moreirense, a team that in the previous round was already led by coach Ricardo Sá Pinto?
We expect a competitive team, in the image of its coach. Recently he also changed his technical command, coming from a victory away from home against Vizela and they are moralized. We believe that they can play in a more closed block, medium/low, with some departures in transition, in our mistake, but, above all, recognize Moreirense’s quality and ability, which, certainly, causes us difficulties at Estádio da Luz. , focus on what we have to do, on our individual and collective capacity, obviously the ambition is to welcome Moreirense and win three more points in our journey.
In the first round of the Championship, the title candidates lost few points. How do you foresee the second half of the test? From now on, the point will become more expensive? To what extent will this interfere with Benfica’s goals?
Above all, we have to focus our attention and our thinking on what we control. We know that we are in a position on the leaderboard where we have no margin of error. Our approach in this second round of the Championship will be to think game by game, always with the objective of three points. From that moment, shorten distances for the two teams that are above us. It has already been achieved on the last journey, and that will be our thinking journey after journey. The second round of the League starts now and each game will be a final for us. We have to approach each game as if it were the last, with the dedication, commitment and determination that we have had in training and that we had in the last game, that’s what we want to extend into the second round.
“We have to approach each game as if it were the last, with the dedication, commitment and determination that we have had in training and that we had in the last game, that’s what we want to extend into the second round”
On interview with BTV, President Rui Costa clearly said that Benfica still believes in winning the national title. How did the squad feel those words? Reinforced confidence for the second round?
It is difficult, but not impossible. In other years we were in similar circumstances, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. The squad, myself and the President are aligned in this objective, which is to fight for the national title. We are in this fight and we firmly believe that this will be possible. In the position we are in, our challenge will be, shortening distances, to get to second place and then think about first. We believe that it is still possible to achieve this goal. As I have mentioned, and the players also feel that, when there is a great connection between the fans and the players, our strength as a team transcends itself, it is greater, so I appeal to the Benfiquistas to be present at Estádio da Luz to watch the our game with Moreirense.
In the same interview with the Clube’s channel, President Rui Costa explained the bet on Nélson Veríssimo, a man of the house, and also said that, in a moment of transition, it was necessary to change a little paradigm and give a shock. What shock does the Club expect from you?
First of all, I would like to thank the President for his words regarding my entry here in the A team. When you change coaches, there is a new training methodology, new ideas, and I believe that is what is expected with our entry. Within what we expected, the players have been very committed, absolute dedication to new ideas and the new way of working, which is perfectly normal when you change coach. From there, prepare the games that the team will have, always with a very big commitment and always with the perspective of fighting for the three points, which was what happened in this last game with Paços [de Ferreira].
“The squad, I and the President are aligned in this objective, which is to fight for the national title. We are in this fight and we strongly believe that it will be possible”
What do the President’s words of confidence mean to you? Is it starting to be a goal of the coach to justify a continuity at Benfica beyond this season?
I focus only on the President’s words regarding our entry. Thanking is synonymous with trust. We are completely aligned on the goals of this season, on the achievements we still have to make, and our focus, beyond the game by game, will only go until the end of this season. Until then, a lot of water will run under the bridge. At the end of the season, this issue is soon seen. More importantly, and I emphasize this, was the trust that the President showed in me to be here, and now we have to work daily towards the goals that we have for this season, which are still many.
If we look at the last two matches, in the forward pair there was a common denominator: Gonçalo Ramos. What makes it different from the other forwards? Will you keep him in the starting lineup now that you have all the forwards available?
Right now, we have the entire squad available. Not wanting to focus on individual issues, we recognize that our squad has great quality. And, depending on the characteristics of each player, it allows us to build different teams for each matchday depending on what the objectives and strategies are for each of the games. That will be our line of thinking. Gonçalo Ramos has different characteristics from Seferovic’s, as does Seferovic in relation to Roman [Yaremchuk], which, in turn, has characteristics different from those of Darwin. It is up to us to look at the characteristics according to the team and strategy for the game, to gather the best eleven for that game. This will be our challenge journey after journey.
“We cannot think of a watertight Benfica in the short/medium term in 4x4x2, because it’s not just the system, we have to think about the dynamics”
Is 4x4x2 a closed system until the end of the season or could there still be changes at that level?
I cannot guarantee that it will be a closed Benfica in 4x4x2. At the risk of repeating myself, our logic goes a lot towards understanding the players we have and understanding the best strategy to approach the next game. We can’t think of a short/medium term watertight Benfica in 4x4x2, because it’s not just the system, we have to think about the dynamics. Coaches talk a lot about dynamics, and it’s true. We can create, within an initial 4x4x2 positioning, different dynamics that can touch other tactical systems. Objectively answering the question: no, we cannot stop it, or, at least, it is not our idea to stop this Benfica in just one system, taking into account what will also be the strategy for the games that we will have in the future.
