On Sunday (December 26th) the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of black ice in several districts and cities in Franconia. In the evening, the DWD renewed its warnings. There is also an advance warning of black ice in numerous regions in Franconia until Monday morning.

Update from December 26th, 2021, 7:20 p.m.: Official warning extended to Lower Franconia

The DWD has just extended its black ice warnings to four districts in Lower Franconia. The following cities and districts are now also affected:

  • Bad Kissingen district
  • District and city of Aschaffenburg
  • Main-Spessart district
  • District of Rhn-Grabfeld

These warnings are valid until 10 p.m. on Sunday evening. Caution! The previous warnings since 5.15 p.m. are still up to date.

Update from December 26th, 2021, 6:10 p.m.: Risk of lightning ice also in Nuremberg and Forchheim

The official warnings from the German Weather Service continue to increase. Two other Franconian circles warn against widespread blackness.

  • District of Nrnberger Land
  • Forchheim district

The warnings apply until 9 p.m. – as do those from 5.15 p.m. and 5.50 p.m. This means that all three Franconian districts are now affected by black ice warnings. They currently apply in eleven Franconian regions.

Update from December 26th, 2021, 5:50 p.m.: DWD expands black ice warnings – nine regions are now affected

The DWD has extended its black ice warnings again.

Warning level 2 of 3 now also applies in another district in the north of Upper Franconia:

The warnings from 5.15 p.m. continue to exist.

This means that there is currently (as of 5:50 p.m.) a black ice warning for nine regions in Franconia. She is expected valid until 9 p.m..

Update from December 26th, 2021, 5.15 p.m.: Current black ice warning for eight districts

The German Weather Service has issued further warnings for widespread blackness. Six districts in Upper Franconia and one in Lower Franconia are affected:

  • District and city of Bamberg
  • Lichtenfels district
  • Kulmbach district
  • Bayreuth district and city
  • Kronach district
  • District and city of Coburg
  • District and city courtyard
  • Haberge district

Warning level 2 of 3 applies in each case. The weather service warns urgently against car journeys and severe disabilities in road and rail traffic.

Update from December 26th, 2021, 11.12 a.m.: Official warning for other regions in Franconia

The DWD has just published a current warning against widespread blackness. “Avoid driving!” Recommends the German Weather Service. Black ice is threatened in the following Franconian towns and districts until approximately 12.30 p.m.

  • District and city of Bamberg
  • Bayreuth district and city
  • Forchheim district
  • Kulmbach district
  • Lichtenfels district

From Sunday evening to Monday morning there is an advance warning for many Franconian regions (see overview below).

Update from December 26th, 2021, 9:59 a.m.: Black ice advance warning from Sunday evening to Monday morning

On Sunday evening and on Monday night, black ice due to freezing rain or drizzle must be expected, explains the German Weather Service. This could lead to increased ice build-up on the roadways, sidewalks and on objects, as well as in some cases considerable obstructions to road and rail traffic. In the course of the morning on Monday, the situation will gradually ease, predicts the DWD.

The advance warning currently applies to the following regions:

  • District and city of Bamberg
  • Bayreuth district and city
  • Bad Kissingen district
  • District and city of Coburg
  • Haberge district
  • District and city courtyard
  • Kronach district
  • Kulmbach district
  • Lichtenfels district
  • District of Rhn-Grabfeld
  • District and city of Schweinfurt
  • District of Wunsiedel i. Fichtel Mountains

The advance warning is valid from Sunday (December 26, 2021) at 6 p.m. until probably Monday (December 27, 2021) at 10 a.m. A current warning for regions in Central Franconia will apply until Sunday morning.

First message from December 26th, 2021, 7:29 am: “Avoid driving!” – Black ice warning until noon

An official warning from the German Weather Service applies on Sunday morning (December 26, 2021). There is a risk of widespread smoothness (level 2 of 3).

There it says: “ATTENTION! Reference to possible dangers: There are severe obstructions in road and rail traffic. Avoid driving!”
