Mélenchon calls for action against the rights

There are militant Sundays darker than others. This Sunday, December 5, the 3,000 people who took part in Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s meeting experienced it. Waiting in the pouring rain, on the austere concrete esplanade of La Défense, for the doors to open. Go down the escalators of this place which resonates so little in the imagination of the left. Once in the room, scream “Resistance, resistance”, because Jean-Luc Mélenchon does not like people chanting his name but also knowing that a few kilometers away, Eric Zemmour held his first candidate meeting, in a room potentially seven times larger.

Everything contributes this Sunday to a diffuse concern, despite the optimistic soundtrack and the audience of public figures who have come to swell the ranks of the “Country parliament” by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Even Aurélie Found, former leader of Attac and now president of this body, concedes it, before entering the scene: “It’s true, it is not the clearest moment, it is not here that it is the easiest given the hold of the far right and the hard right”, a difficulty that makes it all the more « urgent » political commitment alongside Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his program.

Sunday afternoon, the member for Bouches-du-Rhône therefore challenges left-wing voters. Promises them better days, larger rooms – 1,500 people could not enter for lack of space, according to La France insoumise (LFI) -, but urges them to activate to get him elected. Or rather his program, because it is in these terms that the victory at LFI is officially stated. On March 20, in the open air, as in 2012 and 2017, the candidate promises a large gathering, for “The anniversary of the glorious insurrection of the Paris Commune”. And a next meeting on January 10.

As if to ward off a campaign winter which is already looming, complicated by yet another wave of Covid-19 which makes the majority of the militants present wear a mask. “After so much humiliation, sometimes lost fights, but always raising their heads, always ready to fight (…) we come to restore courage to the country as it is shrouded in the darkness of absurd debates over matters of religion or skin color, he begins. No, France is not the extreme right, France is Social Security, it is public health, it is emancipation, school, research, it is sharing. “
