IT failure in West Mecklenburg: unknown people encrypt internal data | – news

Status: 10/15/2021 11:50 a.m.

A major failure of the IT infrastructure, for example in Schwerin, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district and in several municipal companies, is currently causing excitement among those responsible. In the afternoon, the Landesfunkhaus in Schwerin will broadcast a second NDR MV Live at 1:10 p.m.

The Ludwigslust-Parchim district has convened the crisis team – as has the IT service provider KSM, the city of Schwerin and the Schwerin municipal utility. Apparently almost all IT services have failed. As a result, many services are also unavailable to citizens. It was, it was said, “to reckon with considerable restrictions in relation to the availability of the citizen service.” The authorities concerned are currently unable to offer services such as registering a car or applying for a new ID card. And even in the coming days, a lot will probably not work, said the district administrator of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district Stefan Sternberg (SPD) on NDR1 Radio MV. The mayor of Schwerin, Rico Badenschier of the SPD, confirmed this assessment for the state capital on NDR MV Live.

The search for the cause is ongoing

Those responsible are currently looking for the specific cause. According to initial findings, the responsible IT service provider KSM has “fallen victim to malware,” as Sternberg said. “We then had to shut down all of the network’s IT systems.” Police and security authorities have been informed. Apparently strangers have encrypted internal data in the systems in such a way that those affected currently have no access.

The criminal investigation department is investigating

The Schwerin criminal police has started an investigation. Meanwhile, the Schwerin municipal utilities report that the supply of electricity, gas and hot water has been decoupled from the systems and is therefore safe. Mayor Badenschier said that data from citizens was unlikely to be accessed. It is assumed that your own data was encrypted, but not passed on to external agencies. There are no ransom demands so far.

Many computer systems in one hand

In West Mecklenburg, a large part of the IT structure is in the hands of an institution under public law – KSM Kommunalservice Mecklenburg. The state capital Schwerin, the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim, the cities of Grabow and Ludwigslust and others are involved in this large IT company, which also looks after schools, municipal companies and numerous administrations in West Mecklenburg.

It was not until the beginning of October that the municipal utilities in Wismar became the target of a cyber attack. Unknown people had penetrated the utility’s IT systems. The investigators have not yet been able to clarify whether data from the municipal utilities was stolen.
