Seasonal employment in e-commerce has never been better

It is the sector which recruits the most, at the end of the year 2021. According to Pôle emploi, the number of jobs collected in the transport and logistics sector has reached almost 220,000 since the beginning of the year. , including 83,400 in the third quarter: this is 12% more than in the third quarter of 2019, before the crisis linked to Covid-19. For offers relating to warehousing, load handling and moving, the increase is 22%.

The traditional order surplus for the holidays, especially “Black Friday” and Christmas, is even stronger this year. Amazon France says it is doubling its activity and its workforce in logistics sites during this peak of activity: the company has 14,500 employees on permanent contracts and, in September, launched the recruitment of 12,000 people to help prepare, pack and ship customer orders. On job posting sites, the job of order handler-preparer is the most common, accompanied by those of driver, forklift operator, logistics technician or supply manager. Interim dominated

Regarding the nature of the contract, the interim dominated. This success can be explained by flexibility: companies in the sector, which charge very low costs to their customers, must manage recruitments in an optimal manner. Many SMEs delegate recruitment to temp agencies, because they more easily bring together candidates.

As of December 2, out of 76,953 jobs available on the Pôle Emploi site in the transport-logistics category, 55% were on temporary contracts, 37% on permanent contracts and 8% on fixed-term contracts. At Amazon, the 12,000 seasonal agents are all temporary, while Fnac Darty and La Poste combine CDD and temporary work. “The contract depends on local situations, contacts with temporary employment companies”, explains Yves Arnaudo, HR Director of the parcel services branch of La Poste. These seasonal contracts have a variable duration, depending on the companies and trades: “All contracts are for a minimum of two months, often from mid-October to mid-December”, explains Tiffany Foucault, HR Director of Fnac Darty, while the average duration is around a month at La Poste.
