Ctis the story of a cleaning lady who becomes a decorator: in an American hospital, an employee working in a department for patients in a coma decides overnight to change the paintings in the bedrooms. A little attention, of course, but which means a lot: in her own way, she helps people, and symbolically gives more meaning to her work by a « job crafting ». This anecdote comes from the work of three researchers from the Ross School of Business in Michigan dating back to 2007.

The job crafting is a managerial practice which consists in adapting the scope and tasks of a position to the skills and motivations of the employee. Literally, it is “the art of making your workstation with your own hands”, of tinkering with a job. Like the Greek sculptor Pygmalion, shaping the statue of his dreams, the worker reinvents his missions according to his desires. There is no longer a rigid job sheet, but a tailor-made employee sheet.

The term became popular in reaction to the evil of the century that is the loss of meaning at work. It is for example Kévin, accountant, who creates a new method to fill in the accounts, and thus make his work less repetitive.

The quality of working relationships is the second factor, and consists of personalizing your interactions, depending on whether you are dealing with other professions, with your clients… To make friends, Amel, a computer technician who has just arrived may choose to help their colleagues in coworking uncomfortable with the Internet. A hairdresser, to make his profession more complete, does not just cut hair, and most of the time turns into a renowned psychologist.
