Candidates for a spot at the Oscar 2022 are being shown in Brazil

The end of the year and with it the proximity of the cinema awards. Before the Oscar, the most anticipated award from the public, some others happen like the Golden Globe e Critics’ Choice Awards. That way, we managed to have a ‘thermometer’ and predict which films are the most highly rated for Oscar candidates.

Here is a list of some nominated and awarded titles that are on the festival circuit and in cinemas.



Love, sublime love

Made by Steven Spielberg, the film is a remake of the 1961 classic. In a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet the rivalry between groups, set in 1950s New York, is enacted in musical form. The film is being shown in theaters.

Jane Campion, winner of Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, in 1994, by the piano is back. In his new production, a stubborn farmer comes into conflict with family members, bringing up secrets and dilemmas that alter the functioning of life in his surroundings. The film tops the nominations for Golden Globe, beside Belfast and is available at Netflix.

The dramatic comedy directed by Kenneth Branagh is set in Northern Ireland, in the 1960s. Amidst cultural changes, especially social ones, and armed confrontations, the boy Buddy (Juddy Hill) dreams of changes that never seem to come. While his dreams do not come true, he takes comfort in his family environment. The production is being shown on the Rio Festival until 12/19.


Paul Verhoeven once again uses and abuses eroticism to tell a story. This time the protagonist is a nun, in the 17th century, who in addition to performing miracles has disturbing erotic visions. In addition, she becomes romantically involved with a young woman, provoking questions in the Mother Superior, divided between the sacred and the profane that inhabit the woman. The production, based on the book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, is being displayed on the Rio Festival until 12/18.

Gucci house

Another title adapted from a book, but this time directed by Ridley Scott, about the crime that shook the life of one of the most influential family in fashion. The Guccis had their lives devastated by the murder of Maurizio Gucci, a murder articulated by his wife, Patricia. As the main couple, Lady Gaga e Adam Driver which should receive a few more nominations throughout this season. Omfilm is playing in theaters.

King Richard: Creating champions

Based Based Facts, the new movie from Will Smith tells the story of the father of tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams. A drama about a man’s perseverance to give his daughters a professional future. The film is being shown in theaters.

Rio Festival

Two women meet in a delivery room. One, older, feels full at the birth of the baby, the other, very young, is scared. From this meeting a lasting friendship emerges. The production directed by Pedro Almodovar, was the opening movie of Rio Festival and will be released by Netflix in 2022.


Apichatpong “Joe” Weerasethakul is the director’s first film shot outside of Thailand. The film tells the story of Jessica (Tilda Swinton), a British woman who lives in Colombia. The woman starts to hear shrill sounds and thumps that no one else hears and starts an investigation into what might be happening to her. The production is being shown at the Festival do Rio until 12/18. In 2022 the film will be part of the platform’s catalog Mubi.


Oscar nominee Titan


After ten years a father finds his missing son. Crimes, intrigues and body horror are elements that make up this suspense and horror film, directed by Julia Ducornau. The winner of the Palme d’Or at last Cannes Film Festival is being shown at the Festival do Rio until 12/21. In 2022 the film will be part of the platform’s catalog Mubi.
