Weโre getting some additional details about President Donald Trumpโs unique plan to distribute payments to millions of Americans from the massive revenue being generated from his tariff policies.
Heโd referenced the possibility of sending out $2,000 checks to lower- and middle-income Americans in the past, but offered more context during remarks at the White House this week.
During a White House press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president was โcommittedโ to sending checks to Americans.
She added that Trumpโs economic advisors were looking into the matter and exploring all legal options to send the checks.
However, Leavitt was unable to provide a timeline for the checks and stated that the administration would provide an update when one is available.
The checks would require approval from Congress, and Republicans hold a slim majority following the midterm elections.
Fiscally conservative members told Politico that they were skeptical of the rebates, with Representative Ryan Zinke saying: โWeโre $36, $37 trillion in debt. To me, I think our bus is full.
โIf you want to add something, then take something off the bus. Thatโs just me.โ

Representative Tim Burchett told the publication that he was unsure as to whether heโd vote to support the rebates.
โIโd have to see how it affected the debt,โ he said.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has also weighed in on the proposal:
The prospect of receiving a check was unsurprisingly popular among many social media users:
Trumpโs previous statements on the matter included a jab at those who oppose his trade platform:

Since then, however, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessentโs remarks muddied the waters a bit until Trumpโs latest clarification.
โWell, there are a lot of options here that the presidentโs talking about a $2,000 rebate and those โ that would be for families making less than, say, $100,000,โ Bessent told โFox & Friendsโ Wednesday.
โWe havenโt,โ Bessent clarified when asked if the Trump administration had decided on that limit. โItโs in discussion.โ
Bessent later told ABCโs โThis Weekโ that the dividend โcould come in lots of formsโ and that it โcould be just the tax decreases that we are seeing.โ Thatโs a reference to tax cuts including in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that was signed into law earlier this year.
